Many of us depend on Google Maps for directions from point A to point B, but that dependence might backfire if we lose our connection to the internet and Google Maps goes offline.
Fortunately, there is a way of downloading Google Maps prior to your next big journey; thus when you must manage your limited cellular data and can’t access Wi-Fi, or you’re going abroad and don’t want to pay any extra data charges, you can still rely upon your favorite Maps service.
Just keep in mind that while you are going to able to access instructions as well as basic information for your excursions, you will be missing out on some of Google Maps’ features if you use it.
Steps
Begin by installing the Google Maps application on your iPhone or just Android device. If it isn’t already installed, you may get it from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store.
- Sign in with your Google account and click on your profile image in the upper right side of Google Maps. From here, you’ll notice a menu choice for Offline maps; press this to view the maps you’ve already downloaded or to build an entirely new offline map.
- Tap Make a fresh offline map. You are able to move a marked box around the globe using similar touch and drag controls as in standard Google Maps to select the area you wish to keep offline.
- When you’ve chosen the perfect area, click download, and the map will be downloaded every time you connect to WiFi.
While the version that’s offline won’t have all of the features of Google Maps online (such as live traffic updates), it will be able to navigate you using your phone’s GPS – a method that works even when you’re not connected to the internet.
Another thing to keep in mind is that these maps that are offline will consume a significant amount of storage space on your phone. Try download only what you need, otherwise you may find yourself removing apps along with additional information on your phone to make room for your map collection.
